Fiction writing, Real information literacy

I recently treated myself to a moment of leisure reading and noticed how well the book’s author had described the hero’s weapon of choice in battling the villain.  The details were obviously the product of thorough research, yet I didn’t read them in a research paper.

Similarly Jason Wirtz writes about a project where students write short stories.  The students conduct research to supply details for their stories. For full details read

Wirtz, J. (2006). Creating possibilities: Embedding research into creative

writing. English Journal, 95(4), 23-27.

This assignment would obviously not work for all courses.  Research paper alternatives are also not a new topic.  All the same we can appreciate these reminders that information literacy is everywhere.
