The Society of American Archivists observes May Day by drawing attention to disaster preparedness for archives. Though May Day was weeks ago, disaster preparedness remains a timely issue in light of recent tragedies.
We can also honor the day-to-day work of archives and special collections in preserving our culture. In that light I salute USM’s Special Collections in Portland and its Franco-American Collection in Lewiston.
Finally I’ll share some resources for preserving family treasures:
- Care, Handling, and Storage of Photographs (Library of Congress)
- Caring for Color Photographs (National Park Service)
- Caring for Your Photographs (The National Archives)
- Guidelines for the Care of Textiles (The Textile Museum)
Here’s wishing you a summer of memories worth preserving!
